  • Tragedy strikes in the simplest of ways

It's amazing how much damage a little bit of water and electricity can do...

Last Wednesday, I decided to stay up a bit later to work on some stuff, which normally doesn't happen since I like my sleep. I had a cup of water sitting between me and Felix, my laptop, and I made a mental not to myself to move it after organizing some papers so that I wouldn't knock it over. But, as my luck would have it, that's exactly when I knocked it over and had some of the water spill smack dab in the middle of my keyboard. I watched in horror (yes, in slow motion) as a deluge of water cascaded over my keyboard and into my laptop. Instead of doing the smart thing and trying to turn it off right away, I instead tried to grab stuff to dry it off with. Before I got to turn it over to let the water seep out, I heard the hard drive go out and then the screen went blank. Of course I didn't try to turn it back on right then. I let it sit upside down on a towel over night and the next day I had a few friends help me open it up to let it dry out in pieces. After we put it back together, I got what I hoped for, which was having the HD in tact at the very least, but it still won't turn on. Maybe I should have hoped for a little bit more than that...

I was a bit angry at some people earlier when I was trying to enlist some help on some good places to get my computer fixed, and all I got were snide comments about how PCs are so much better than macs. I really could care less about the age-old rivalry, and hearing it then only made me angry. Would I have gotten more sympathy if I had spilled water on a PC instead? Probably. And that made me all the more aggravated, because I really don't think you can straight up call one better than the other. Rawr. So now I'm hunting for computer repair places in Chicago that'll give me what I want for a price lower than the Apple flat rate of $750+tax for any sort of out of store repairs. Sadness... In the mean time, I'm using a friend's old laptop, which is alright for now, I guess. Better than those first few days where I was stuck doing everything on my iTouch. Hopefully I can get Felix back running soon, or, at the very least, a "Felix II" as some people are saying. *sigh* If only I hadn't decided to be responsible and productive that day...

  • Halloween!

This past weekend was the most fun I've had in a while involving free burritos, a dance party, "Iron Man," Beaker from the Muppets, and much, much more. I'll be sure to write more about it later.

For now, here's the latest post at Nyamo's Blog.

After finally figuring out a costume I wanted to do that would be fun and kind of ridiculous, I took a quick trip to Blick to pick up Beaker supplies. It only took a few hours to make it, which was pretty awesome. The nose was probably the hardest part because I had to carve up two Styrofoam balls and glue them together to make it.

    Beaker head complete!

After sewing a tie, i was ready to go; and Anthony and I set off to the BOG for the Halloween Dance Party.

It was really great seeing the BOG all decked out for the event. It almost feels more appropriate that way than it does normally without any sort of decorations.

Linda caught me here on camera while cosmic bowling. This is one of my favorite pics from that night.

DJ Kid Color was amazing (again) and the BOG was packed with dancing pirates, anime characters, faeries, a kiwi, and many other colorful characters.

Jimmy and I were excited about the tickets we got for free "fried zombie snot," or something like that...

Saturday was the 5th Annual BMES Pumkin Launch. We had 6 teams competing, but one team had to drop out due to their trebuchet arm breaking from too much weight.

There were 4 line judges, including myself, that ran through the pouring rain to see just how far the pumpkins went. I believe at least 4 of the teams exceeded 20 feet, and one team kept having difficulties with their release.

There goes one of the winning pumpkin launches... I think the winning distance was 180+ft. We didn't have anyone break last year's record, but it was still a pretty good launch considering the horrid weather.

Another great Halloween tradition we have is going to Chipotle for their Boo-Riffic Halloween special, which is a free burrito for dressing up as a burrito, taco, or taco salad. And that meant a lot of foil...

Phil and Nyamo were all set to go in minutes.

As was Joy, who hid her burrito-ness within her jacket.

I had to resort to wrapping my arm up since I already had a bunch on.

The line at the Randolph Chipotle was out the door when we got there, so we were super hungry when we finally had our orders in. There were also these really obnoxious teenagers that kept cutting in line. When they got to the register, they didn't have any foil on them so the manager wouldn't give them any free burritos. That turned into quite the scene, but I guess they got what they had comin' to 'em.

Even Nyamo appreciates a good burrito.

Pete, Max, and Chris were the real Chipotle troopers. They visited 4 different Chipotle locations and went to one of those twice to get a total of 5 free burritos each. Pete and Chris had their bags full by the end of the night.

Max, the Burrito King, shows off his spoils of the night, minus a few casualties to hunger.

We just had to make a burrito pyramid out of what burritos we had left when we got back to campus. It was great. Also, the Swedish Chef made a quick appearance. Bork, bork, bork! The rest of the night was spent relaxing, eating Halloween funfetti cupcakes that Max baked, and watching "Iron Man" in HD. Then, what better way to end a great weekend than to sleep in an extra hour for DST. Ah...

  • Lazy Post

Homecoming week was so tiring... From window painting to archery to water balloon capture the flag to club night to making a float for a parade, and going to the carnival for a bit, I'm so tired out. Overall, we took 3rd place as Throwback 4th East, which goes back all the way to Freshman year before I even knew most of the guys on the team. I'd say it was a pretty good year for us, having finally accomplished our goal of beating the frats (although, to be honest, the frats really didn't put up much of a fight this year). It was a little sad during those moments when I'd think "man, we could totally do this better next year if..." then I'd realize, there isn't going to be a next year. Last week was our last homecoming week at IIT. The last time that we'd have our crazy spirit team with our last minute ideas that turn out surprisingly awesome every time. To be honest, I've never been one to get all that excited about school sports or dances or whatever, but I think I'm actually going to miss it.

As much as I keep telling myself I'm pretty much over IIT, but I think I'm going to miss it more than MPI and actually realize it before several years go by. Maybe that's also because I'm not raring to go off somewhere like I was in high school. I really wanted to get away from home and get out somewhere. This time around, graduation's approaching steadily and I'm still sitting here trying to figure out what the hell I'm doing and where I'm going. Nothing like that feeling to keep you clinging onto something, and unfortunately(?) that thing has become IIT. At least for now.

Other things that happened this past week:

    - Got 4 free shirts
    - Got to see my sister
    - Saw my friend slice open his thumb deep enough that adipose tissue was oozing out, then got to watch as he poured Skol vodka on it before helping him gauze and tape it up with electrical tape
    - Cleaned the kitchen
    - Sat through a lightning storm
    - Visited the MSI Fab Lab
    - Almost went on a flight simulator
    - Got bruised from a water balloon
    - Saw Mike Droho and the Compass Rose perform
    - Spent an entire day doing homework
    - Made delicious fried rice, steak, and chocolate pudding
    - Saw "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" in 3D
    - Made a watermelon hawk

  • So much to do

So much to do... and too little time to give all my attention to any one thing for long enough. People keep reminding me about things I have to/need to/should do, and it's like "gah, okay, I know." These are all things I already about and have on my to-do list, and most of them are things I actually do want to work on. I just can't find enough time for everything.

In light of this, lately I've been trying to spend more time being in the moment and letting other things go while I'm doing whatever it is I'm doing. This way I can have more fun when I go out to have fun or relax more when I set out to relax for a bit. I suppose it's a way of living in the moment, but it also helps me to feel better about the things that I do. There's less stress there when I can focus more of my attention on the thing at hand instead of keeping multiple other things in the back of my mind at the same time. It's kind of a hard change for me to make, but I'm enjoying it so far.
